The Batey -- March 2, 2012

The Batey is the community where the Haitian immigrants/refugees live. They worked In the sugarcane fields until the companies in the industry went under.

This is the community center Diane Pellerin built in the batey. Diane owns and operates Suncamp. She holds English classes and activities here during the week, and feeds the children oatmeal every Saturday.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Patrick, the pastor of the church and director of the school in the batey. Most of the kids cannot attend the public school outside the batey because they cannot afford the school uniforms, which students are required to wear.
